What is a good home remedy for an ear infection?

What is a good home remedy for an ear infection?
Please help if you can. My poor husband has had an ear ache for about a week now. It was just a little irritated until last night and tonight it's gotten even worse. He's tried the over the counter ear drops but says they aren't working. We've tried hydrogen peroxide and placing warm washcloths on his ear, but that's not really working, either. It's 2:30am and he doesn't want to go to the ER. What can I do? It's so frustrating to see him hurting and to have no idea what to do or how to help. He can't sleep because of it - he's been tossing and turning all night so far. Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated.

Mix white vinegar 50/50 with clean water. Drop into ear, and wiggle ear to ensure it goes all the way in.

I have a huge problem; my cocker spaniel has an ear infection. Judging from the peeling and red inflammation I would guess it is an outer ear infection. Ordinarily I would take her to the vet for medical attention. However, my husband is out of work right now (gotta love these tough economic times) and we are just barely scraping by this month. I get paid on the 30th, but it is starting to bother her...she is shaking her head and scratching her ears constantly when she isn't sleeping; she has made her ear bleed... I just want her to have a little relief, I feel like a terrible mother cause there's nothing I can do to help her. If you know of ANYTHING that can help her...something I can get at the grocery store to sooth her ears that won't cost me $200 I don't have before I get paid, I would be so thankful.

Please do not respond to this by telling me she needs to see a vet. I know this, I am not one of those cheap, irresponsible dog owners looking for a way out of an expensive vet fee. I feel terrible because I cannot take her to one, and as soon as I can that is my first priority. But in the mean time she needs something...the vet is ten days away and she is miserable.

Seriously, I would never do this, but I was told by one of my friends yesterday and my own mother.........Shyla had an ear infection, I did breast milk in the ear, which does work! But I told my mom and was talking to one of my friends yesterday, how she had a rough time falling asleep the one night. They both said to blow smoke in her. My friend said her dad used to this when they got ear infection and it worked, my mother said my dad used to blow smoke in her ear when she got one and swear by it. I would like to mention my mom is anti-cigarette, SO coming from her, it was strange. I would never do this, as cigarette smoke IS obviously now known to CAUSE ear infection, BUT have you ever heard of this before? What other off the wall remedies have you legitimately heard people tell you to use on common illnesses?

I've heard that too. I wonder if it works on the same premise as a warm hair dryer: that it's warm and helps loosen the fluid build up in the tubes. For ear infections I've also heard of mixing some freshly pressed garlic with some olive oil and putting a couple of drops in the ears. Garlic supposedly has some antibacterial properties.

Well, I don't know about the infection itself, but my lab gets ear infections caused from allergies (and yeast infections!). We give her plain yogurt every night, and just your common benadryll, and it seems to help her a lot. A warning on the benadryll, though, it doesn't always work for all dogs, and it might make your doggie drowsy.

No. Ear infections can be caused by many things, yeast, bacteria, mites, or a combination of the three. You need to have a vet look at the ears and determine the cause of the infection, and give you the proper treatment. Antibiotic or antifungal ear ointments are most often prescribed, a serious infection may require oral treatments as well.

I understand your situation, however, ear infections are painful for pets and trying to treat it at home really is not going to help your pet, in fact there is a possiblity that you can do more harm than good. Please seek medical attention for your pet.

Do NOT use ANY home remedies in the ear...You have no idea waht type of problem you are dealing with. By using home remedies you could make the problem worse and even cause hearing loss..Get the dog into the vet and get a proper diagnosis..by waiting and by self medicating you could end up not only causing intense pain for your dog but also cost yourself a lot more money. Being a responsible owner means seeking medical attention when needed. In some states it is considered animal cruelty to not get proper veterinary care and lack of money is not considered an excuse.

There's nothing I hate more than an ear infection, and I'm starting to worry that I may be developing one. I have a very light ache on the right side of my face right now, and it seems to be centered at my ear. I have not been swimming recently, but I did use Q-tips yesterday. I have a feeling I may just have a headache right now and I'm focusing too much on the pain near my ear (since I'm terrified of ear infections). But just in case I might be developing an infection, I wanted to know if there are any ways to prevent it from worsening or treat it at home? I know you can cure a UTI by drinking Cranberry juice or lots of water, and I was looking for some sort of cure like that for my ear. I remember when I was a kid, my mom would put vinegar in our ears. But will that cure the infection? Is there anything I can do now to prevent a trip to the doctor?

You CANNOT cure a UTI by drinking cranberry juice... you can only prevent. It makes the environment of the bladder more acidic, so that bacteria do not replicate. Once they are there and have multiplied, you're SOL.

So much for a relaxing bath. When ever I put my head under my ears got clogged up. Like they needed to pop. It was like that for a couple days, I though that it would go away. When I woke up it hurt to the touch. I'm guessing I have swimmers ear.

Heat 2 teaspoons of mustard oil and add ½ a teaspoon of carom seeds and a flake of crushed garlic. Boil the mixture till it gets fiery red. Filter the mixture to use it as ear drops (2-3 drops I each ear twice a day). This is especially helpful if the pain is due to a boil inside the ear.

If you have mullein oil - that's what you need to use. But mullein is not an everyday pantry item for most people unless you are a homeopathic fan. So, in a pinch, you can use olive oil.

Take 3-4 cloves of garlic and crush or mince it and add 3 ounces of olive oil. Put it in a small glass jar with a lid. Shake the mixture occassionally for a period of 4 hours. Then strain the garlic out and put the oil in a dropper bottle. Put 3 drops of the garlic oil in your ear 2 times daily.

i have an ear infection and i cannot afford to go to the doctor. what are some at home remedies that can cure it? any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Well it depends on what type of ear infection you have (inner or outer) however, to relieve pain and help cure a normal ear ache or ear infection I have heard that putting a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in your ear will help to cure. To relieve pain, try a few drops of warm olive oil with a cotton ball.

does anyone know of any home remedies that might help. I think i have an ear infection -and its so painful. Cant get an appointment at doctors until tomorrow afternoon.

Home remedies include pain medication, whether ibuprofen and or Tylenol. I recommend an antihistamine and decongestant, even though not everyone wants to recommend the antihistamine, but I feel it will dry up the sinuses.

If you have a true ear infection, nothing is going to clear it up but antibiotics. Infections left untreated can actually move down into another part of your body (like your hip bone: I've seen it happen) Then you may be hospitalized. Ear infections, left untreated can also lead to ruptured ear drums, and hearing loss.

Go to your local Health Dept. You can see a doctor there, and they won't charge you much. These home remedies are probably good to relieve the pain, but not so good at killing infections.

I was just diagnosed with an ear infection in both of my ears and a sinus infection. Ouch! I'm unable to sleep at all - and I'm wondering if there are any simple things I can do to help ease the pain. So far, medicine hasn't worked. I've tried chicken noodle soup and steam. Steam seems to just be temporary relief.. but I'd like to feel relief for at least an hour or two so I can fall asleep.

try a couple of drops of warm olive oil in the ear. some eucalytus oil in the steam. a hot cloth on your face,or sometimes a cotton ball with a little black pepper on it and lay on that ear. you may want to consider getting a netti pot . or at least some saline solution nasal spray.

- Hold a warm compress to the ear. Inhaling steam may also help. Or use a vaporizer if you have one.

Echinacea works really well, but I have found that the liquid form far outweighs the pill form. The liquid form is nasty as hell but it does work as well as antibiotics in some cases.

I am pretty sure I have an ear infection. I need to know some home remedies, or where to go for the Thermo auricular therapy.

Take the remedy which is similar to your symptoms. No side effects or complications if taken as directed, please do not exceed the given dosage and under any circumstances do not try to mix any remedies and avoid Chocolates, Mints, Coffee, Red Meat, Alcoholic and Carbonated drinks, Spicy Rich Food while taking any Homeopathic remedies, and keep the medicines away from direct sunlight, heat strong smells and perfumes and do not store them in the fridge.

Home remedies are all fine and dandy, but it's far better to get the cause of the problem identified, and properly treated. Over the years I've found it's far better to have a swab taken from the inside of the ear (assuming this isn't mites of course!!), and have it cultured, so the correct antibiotic drops can be use. Otherwise you are just into the 'try this, try that' situation, which doesn't cure the problem, and empties your Bank Account very fast!! Once an ear condition becomes chronic, it's the very devil to cure.

Ask your veterinary surgeon for a prescription and buy your product on line, if the surgery is such a way off. Don't make up anything - I'm reading about olive oil potions - don't go there. To keep your dogs ears a bit cleaner you could use Shaws Ear Cleaning solution, and try using Thornit antiseptic powder once every couple of weeks - available on line without prescription. Sounds as though you need Canaural drops or something, so speak with the vet and come to an arrangement.

I think i have an ear infection - and im in a lot of pain. I cant get an appointment at the doctors until tomorrow afternoon. Does anyone know of anything that might help with the pain in the mean time?

The first 2 are managed with basically pain relief possibly with a decongestant, paracetamol +/- ibuprofen + galseud might help while you are waiting for your GP to confirm the diagnosis. Antibiotics are not recommended for either of these conditions.

apple cidar vinegar is very good for stopping ear infections, I have supplied a web page for you below. I have found a different web page before that also said to give your dog a little in their water bowl, but I'm sure you can do more research yourself.

Mixed at a 1:1 ratio. Draw up about 3ml in a seringe (no needle). "milk" external ear for dispersion, then carefully debraid the ear with multiple "clean" Q-tips. Dose monthly for prevention...weekly for chronic, and daily during acute infection.

thank you everybody! and i am the child, just so ya know. im 11. and we heard blow smoke in the ear. it helps the pain, because of the warmth. but it didnt do much besides that.

Yes! Buy a bottle of garlic oil capsules. Take one and roll it around in your hand for a minute to melt the jelly-like oil. Pierce the end of it with a sterile needle, and squeeze the oil into the ear. Work it down good, and put a cotton plug in the ear. Garlic is a natural antibiotic. I've done this with my own 2 year old who had so many ear infections, she had to take antibiotics for 2 months straight once. The garlic oil method cured the ear infection in 2 days (done every 4 hours) Her pediatrician confirmed that it was gone too.
